Today I found out about a wonderfully wonderful knitting event, the Ravelympics! Basically, it's a free-for-all where knitters/crocheters/spinners/etc. pick crafty events to participate in. You can't start the project(s) until the opening ceremony, and you have to finish before the closing ceremony.

I signed up for three events: Cowl Jump, Amigurumi Toss, and Mitten Medley. The whole idea is the challenge yourself, and I think three projects in 17 days is a good challenge! Most people choose one complicated pattern to undertake, but I thought a few different kinds would be fun. So here's the plan:

For the Cowl Jump, I have three different patterns in mind:

Smoke Ring by Cosette Cornelius-Bates

Grassy by Larissa Brown

... and Cashmere Cowl No. 2 by The Purl Bee

I have a feeling I'll be doing the last one, because I have a skein of absolutely stunning Malabrigo Lace in violet that I am dying to use. Seriously.

For the next event, the Amigurumi Toss, I am going to make the set of four Fighters by NeedleNoodles:

I may need to limit myself to one of them, maybe two. It depends on how quick they are to crochet (which it looks like they are very quick projects, minus the felt parts, etc.).

And for the Mitten Medley I'll be making a pair of Rose's Wrist Warmers.

You can kind of see them I guess. I couldn't find a better shot.

I'm pretty sure of what yarns to use so far. Malabrigo Lace for Cashmere Cowl No. 2 (if that ends up being the cowl I choose), I'll probably make the Fighters out of scraps of Knit Picks Swish Superwash or Caron Simply Soft (while packing today I discovered that I have, like, ten skeins of the stuff in lots of different colors), and Rowan Pure Wool DK for the wrist warmers.

Phew. That's a lot of stuff. I can't wait!

Things I have learned about Life by Crocheting

1) With patience, you can have beautiful things one small stitch at a time.

2) Quick and easy is good for the soul once in a while, but too much makes one sick.

3) Don't give up when something is hard to do, but don't be afraid to set them aside for a time.

4) Remember to finish what you have started.

5) Be organized in all you do or you will lose all of your hard work and inspiration in your projects.

6) Know your limits and don't start too many projects or nothing will get done.

7) Try new things! You may not like it at first but it might just turn out beautiful.

8) Even the simplest things are intricately woven.

9) Be proud of your work, even if no one else is.

10) With some string and imagination you can make comforting, loving, useful and even playful things and change a life.

Project Dump

It's been a while, a productive while, since I posted. I have a backlog of blog.
So here goes.
Let's start with something cute. The alien family. They came to earth to explore it's rich viral biodiversity with some friends they are expecting to arrive any day. They chose to stay in my town because it's high in the mountains and their beacon equipment will more easily guide their friends in, then they plan to travel to the New York City underground, and the polar ice caps to observe viruses in action.
... it takes all kinds, I guess.

Next, Let's go to a failed project. I mentioned I was thinking about a schoolgirl ami. She didn't work out very well at all, and all the little french knots for her hair took two days.

My alien family's friends showed up, and they were amused to pose for a picture taken with my quaint little camera. I thought their pet, picked up on a planet on the way, was very cute.

Jordan, Fancy-Dress Amigurumi

This is Jordan. I have been working on her for about a month, off and on. Just the other day I bought the blond yarn for her hair and her ribbons and was able to finish her. She is about 10 1/2" tall, and stands easily on her own two feet. I think the weight of her skirt helps balance her evenly, right now she's on top of the piano, observing everything out of her gorgeous eyes, courtesy of Suncatcher Eyes.
She was made without a pattern, I just eyeballed everything.

monday monkey works for the weekend, sir

I FINISHED IT, WOOOO! The paper that was due on Wednesday was ultimately finished on Sunday, and to celebrate I've done nothing but knit. And dumpster furniture.

smocking stitch mug cozy

This is my Mother's Day gift for my mum. I think she'll like it. The mug was like $3 and I used scrap yarn to make the cozy. Easy peasy.

Another cozy, this one for my friend Steph's birthday. I love the big button. Again, the cup was $3 and the yarn was leftovers from a previous project.

As for the furniture acquisition: it's May, so many student-types move during the beginning of the month. As the majority of my apartment building is BGSU students (myself included) there are often times when people ditch furniture when moving. And then I pounce! Check out this bad-boy:

knitting chair!

The low arms and wide seat make it a perfect knitting chair. I'm so excited. And the beauty of it being dumpstered is that when I move in August, I can just dump it if I don't have room! Some other lucky soul can have a chair. If you're wondering, I did go through and clean it up with upholstery cleaner and vacuumed the crap out of it. Literally and/or figuratively.

Tomorrow I resume thesis writing. My goal is to have it written in the next three weeks. I think I can do it!

Why yes, I did finally finish the biscuit amigurumi for my friend knitmn on Ravelry. The photo doesn't do it much justice, but you get the idea. It's a pillow that looks like a biscuit. I've finished three projects today ... and I'm still completely unmotivated to work on anything remotely school-ish. I'll take The Doctor's advice, I suppose.

Introducing BC Fuzzball

BC is the latest addition to the Suncatcher Eyes family. BC (short for Buttercream) Fuzzball is my favorite ami yet. She is so soft. I'll definitely be making more of them, and possibly writing the pattern too :)
